Many so-called "free trials" for wrinkle creams, weight-loss products, and makeup samples are scams.  Just about all of them ask for a credit card number for shipping and handling charges.  You'll usually get the product alright - so it isn't outright fraud - but the creams, pills, and samples are worthless:  what they really want is your credit card number based on the legitimacy of the trial so they can charge you for future products, the terms for which are usually hidden in some fine print that's almost impossible to find.

 
Yes you will get the advertised product - and likely much more of it than you thought!  In fact, chances are you've been enrolled in an automatic shipping program, which will send you the product every month at full price automatically.  And good luck trying to cancel - most of their 800 numbers don't work.   Most people who get scammed this way are forced to cancel their credit cards, but in the end wind up having to pay for the goods they received as they did indeed unwittingly authorize the purchase when they signed up for the free trial, whose terms and conditions are usually somewhere.  The Better Business Bureau can barely keep up with all of the "free trial" sites out there touting these free "no-risk" trials that are in reality extremely risky.
 
Another scam to be aware of is so-called "review" websites, which supposedly rank products for their effectiveness.  Small websites with names like "Top10wrinklecreams.com" or "dietsthatwork.com" are usually paid product placements masquerading as reviews.  You'll find these "reviews" for nearly every product category - including software, financial products, electronics and just about anything else you can think of.  The tell-tale sign is that there's usually not much more to the website than a few pages.  It's also usually pretty tough to find out much information about the reviewer.  If you don't know anything about the source, don't trust it.
