Twittering their productivity away

As more and more social networking, blogs, twitters and other ways to "connect" are pushed onto the market, it's harder than ever to keep team members focused.  How can you ensure your priorities stay their priorities?

What lies beneath

Let's admit it - Most of us fall for the hype surrounding the latest, greatest wrinkle cream promises only to encounter disappointment after handing over our hard-earned money.  I have found a great website which provides unbiased information on which treatments have been found to work versus which are pure hype.

Is your company sales pitch costing you customers?

Nearly every entrepreneur knows the importance of their elevator pitch, yet an extraordinary number of them fail this simple test.  Your pitch could be costing you investors, customers, employees and media attention just when you need them more than ever.  Consider this actual example:

Sexist men earn higher salaries

A new study has found that men with traditional views of gender roles earn nearly $12,000 more than men and with egalitarian attitudes – and nearly $15,000 more than women. The study also found that more educated men tended to be more accepting of equality in gender roles, while the less educated clung to the sexist view.  So sexists have more money, but aren’t as bright.  In all seriousness, study co-author Beth Livingston told me that while conducting her press tour, Fox News ran out of time before she could get to that point.  Learn more about why sexists make more money and what you can do to even the score.

That cell-phone in his pocket could cause male infertility

A new study shows that men who keep their cell-phones in their pocket while talking when using a hands-free headset are at higher risk for male infertility, and possibly testicular cancer.  Further, a scientist at a well-known cancer institute sounds the alarm on cell-phone use among children.  Remember when smoking was considered just fine for your health too?  If you’d prefer not to be one of millions of guinea pigs, read this article.

Dressing to distraction

I don’t think I am a sexist pig.  I love working with “ball-busting” women in the workplace, and I’m proud of my wife’s accomplishments as a VP in a Fortune 500 company.  I do some housework.  And I think strip clubs are sad, desperate places.  I mention those things to burnish my “nice guy” credentials before I say what I’ve got to say:   As many times as not, when meeting with women in the workplace, I’m put in the impossible position of trying not to look at their breasts - simply because of what they’ve chosen to wear that day.   Clearly some women intentionally dress to provoke, showing fleshy cleavage and wearing tight or see-through shirts.   But I want to address those of you who don’t mean to attract this kind of unprofessional attention, and ask you to consider these “dress-to-distraction” clothing situations:

Girl jocks make the best CEOs

I’ve found that women who play team sports have better skills to compete in a male dominated business world.   Whereas men have learned to have a knock-down, drag-out battle and walk away friends,  women are supposed to value the relationship as much as the outcome and are taught not to rock the social boat. Sports helps women learn they can compete and still be friends.  Here are some tips to improve your competitive response.

Women entrepreneurs are "it"

Although women are starting businesses at twice the rate of the national average, the reality is that companies with women CEOs only attracted a paltry 2.9% of available venture funding last year, according to VentureOne, a subsidiary of Dow Jones, down from 4.52% in 2006.  In fact, this percentage has dropped nearly every year from a high-point of 7.55% in 2002.   To get behind why women-owned businesses have received so little venture funding, we talked to Sharon Vosmek, CEO of Astia (www.astia.org), a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting women-led companies with access to equity funding, achieving and maintaining high growth, and leadership mentoring.   To be fundable, a business must show a significant growth opportunity – and here’s where Vosmek says women literally fall short, as they tend to be much more conservative on their estimates of market opportunity than their male counterparts.   Learn why.

A culture of cowards

Female business blogger gets death threats for negative comments about batman movie.

An entrepreneur and business blogger for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, one of Seattle’s daily newspapers, recently wrote an admittedly frivolous post comparing the movie Batman the Dark Knight to risks in a business venture.   In mere hours, fans of the movie cyber-attacked her for the “negative review”, one with such aggressive hate as to wish her gang-raped and shot.  We have created a culture of cowards, those who hide behind the anonymous comment. The media used to castigate such cyber-bullying behavior - until its publishers also got seduced by the web traffic such comments help generate.  Here are some tips to protect yourself from cyber-bullies if you're not 100% sure they'll kee their presence limited to cyberspace.

Sisters are doing it for themselves

Statistics show that women have been backsliding with regard to pay, board seats and corporate officer posts over the past 3 years.  The assumed reason is that more women are dropping out of the workforce to become moms - But it seems the real reason is they're choosing to work for themselves -
